An old tube of mascara. An off-colored foundation. An out-of-style eyeshadow palette. Every woman’s makeup bag, probably, has one or two (or three) products that she just can’t seem to throw away. It’s time to take out your trash cans, though, because makeup has an expiration date! While many products contain preservatives that kill common bacteria, they can’t fight it fast enough, when make-up is exposed to air and, thus, leaving your face unprotected from airborne bacteria. And, of course, makeup that sits around for years won’t provide the same coverage or color, as it once did. 1. Mascara shelf life
Throw it away every three months
Mascara is, perhaps, the biggest offender, when it comes to germs, because it’s tube is very often opened, closed and exposed to airborne bacteria. Because the mascara wand works so closely with the eyes, it’s also prone to holding onto the bacteria that can cause eye’s itchiness, redness or even conjunctivitis. If you’ve, somehow, got an eye irritation, you should stop using eye makeup until you’re completely cleared of the virus.
